Double Down Donald. Adventures In VeVe #70

Mickey and Friends Lenticular Donald #5934

I want to talk about Donald.

No, not that Donald, this isn’t a political blog.

I’m talking about the other controversial Donald, and his name is Donald Duck!  Because I want to talk about why a collectible that should be revered by every Disney collector gets so little respect.  Yes, some of it is how many mints are involved here, and I get that.  But the other part of it has to do with something that happened two weeks before it dropped: Mickey and Friends lenticulars!

The Mickey and Friends lenticulars dropped at the end of January in ‘22.  I got the Donald Duck Lenticular on the drop; the LP got Pluto (but we don’t talk about Pluto.)

After the drop, we spent days explaining to our friends what lenticulars were, why they were cool, and why most of them were the first on the block chain despite the FE tag, and we were still arguing when VeVe's new definitions of what made something “First Appearance" and what made something “First Edition” came out.

Two weeks later on Valentine’s Day, Donald and Daisy dropped with an FA tag.  Just like that, Donald and Daisy ended up standing at ground zero.

Oh, the pie slinging!  With collectors taking sides on which one mattered more; first licensed image on blockchain, or first ‘statue appearance’.  It went back and forth for weeks, although to be fair, there were also a lot of people shouting about some of their other collectibles getting downgraded to the dreaded FE title along with it.

I, of course, sided with those who thought that the first image of Donald Duck on the block chain was a lot more important, regardless of whether it was a lenticular or not.

Last week I happened to look up old Donald, and when it comes to the court of popular opinion, it’s pretty clear from the gem discrepancy that I lost that one.

But do you know what?  I don’t care what anybody else thinks.

The lenticular Donald is more important to me, and just what is a collectible worth anyway, except to the person who collects it?

Isn’t that true of all collectibles?

Still… that whole FE/FA thing wasn’t exactly kind to the Donald and Daisy Golden Moments statue either, and to be honest, I don’t think the matter will ever be settled completely, so…

Forgive me if I take advantage of a good duck when he’s down and grab the statue as well.

And now that I have both, I guess it doesn’t matter which way popular opinion goes!

But Donald and Daisy still serve as a good reminder that growing pains are going to happen from time to time… this is a whole new world of collecting after all.

It’s no wonder that people watching our social media think we’re a bit quackers.
