Veve Digital Collectibles Comic |
I have an announcement to make!
I have some super duper extra scarce Secret Rares and Ultra Rares because of the burn!
The problem is that nobody knows about it.
Being an Uncommon collector, scarcity isn’t typically a thing that I’ve ever had to worry about. There were only two comics in the past that I’ve had to chase to get a hold of. But I’ve got muscle memory of how much of a pain that was, and I really don’t want to go through all of that again!
So when the burn was announced, I opened the store and scrolled all the way back to see what was on the chopping block, comparing it to the market and making sure I had them all, especially the ones I knew didn’t do so well. Typically, I just wait a couple of days until the Uncommons drop to two gems and pick it up then, so I wasn’t surprised that I missed some. But there were a handful of titles that were so scarce that I bought it from the store, such as “It’s Your Life Donald” where I got the secret rare.
Then there was Hawkeye #1; which at the moment that I checked it, the floor for the Uncommon was twice the store price. What? I’m not paying twice the store price of a modern comic, not on something that’s easy to get by simply clicking the button! So I clicked the button… and got the Ultra Rare. Okay, whatever… did it again. Another Ultra Rare. Oh, come on, give me a break! There’s got to be an Uncommon in here somewhere! Pushed the button… Rare. Seriously? Finally… FINALLY after four tries I got an uncommon. No wonder the price for them was out of whack in the market if that’s what I had to go through to get it.
A few days later, That Guy in the Basement said that Superior Iron Man #1 might be worth holding onto. Well someone just floored the SR, so I’ll pick that up for the vault since I have the gems too. After that, I picked up a few extra uncommon cover favs, then ran out of gem allowance.
Time passed… burn happened, everyone rejoiced. I was just glad I got all of the Uncommon comics so I didn’t have to chase any and focused on the other big thing that happened that day: the Veveverse!
Let’s face it, the Veveverse was so big that a lot of people applauded the new burn mechs but then didn’t give them a second thought because they were too busy absorbed in Veveverse streams or building out their spaces; including me.
I was still struggling getting my “Blue Box” proportions right with makeshift tools when That One Guy I Follow on Twix happened to be looking at the Hawkeye #1 UR on Stackr and noticed that there are only 63 public mints in circulation. I was listed as one of the top holders.
Wait. What?
I owned 3% of the comic supply by owning two of them! Since when does Ms. Two-Gem comics and collectibles end up with that kind of statistic?
I checked Superior Iron Man #1: 1 of 52 SR’s. Even if someone wins another one through a contest, it will still be a very scarce Secret Rare.
As for my Secret Rare It’s Your Life, Donald: 1 of 34. I have never owned anything on VeVe that rare, not ever.
So, of course, out of curiosity, I went to the market to see how they were doing. But after looking at the prices and deciding that I, personally, would never sell them for that, I opened up the details to my Superior Iron Man #1 SR and found:
Superior Ironman in circulation: 1154.
As for That’s Your Life Donald: 961.
Okay, so at least there’s a hint that the Secret Rare might be extremely rare in the fact that the one comic is under a thousand. The problem is that unless you go digging for it, there’s no indication in the market how rare it really is. Since there is a random number involved in the distribution, there is no way of knowing just by looking at the number “1154” in the market details how many of each rarity was pulled.
As for my Uncommon collection, there are only 251 Uncommon That’s Your Life Donald comics. There are only 200 Uncommon Hawkeyes. So many got burned in that first run that there may be some even lower I haven’t discovered yet; I just know that I just ended up with a lot of Uncommon comics more scarce in number than most secret rares of popular comics.
I just wish that people could see that when they go into the market. There are so many hidden gems now, but unless you start digging, you don’t even know it.
It really makes me wonder if scarcity is anywhere near as important as the “Scarcity is King” crowd thinks it is.
And if it is important, maybe comic collectors need to dig a little harder until this is fixed.
If you have some comics that you’ve been holding since the March first burn, I suggest taking a trip to Stackr.world to take a look at what you’ve got.
You never know… it might surprise you.
