Hello, new adventurers and old campaigners alike! It’s time for another Field Notes—yes, already!
In last week's debut episode, we looked at some collectibles in the market that may be worth picking up for spring. This week, we're talking about comics.
Because let's face it... VeVe has a LOT of comics.
You may have the nerve to download the app.
You may even have the nerve to complete KYC.
But do you have the nerve to open up the market and click that Comic tab? The library available can be quite overwhelming, even if your entry point was the VeVe comics app.
This is for someone who may have never collected comics in their life but wants to start a good foundation of comics in their collection to build from. Fortunately, there are a lot of historically significant comics in here that are quite reasonable even if you don't have a lot of money.
My first piece of advice is: Start small, start slow, and with what you know!
And that's why this first group of picks is all about Spider-Man. Even if you've never collected a comic book in your life, you've heard of Spider-Man, so this is definitely a great place to start, especially if you're completely new to the space. You will still recognize most of the iconic characters listed. Along with an explanation of why I picked it, I'll give an approximate market price at the time of blog and a few details to look for to make sure you get the right one, since it's possible to have more than one comic with the same name and number.
Since this is for a base collection, it is focusing on the common covers which feature the original printed cover.
Ultimate Fallout #4 (~10 Gems)
First appearance of Miles Morales; 2011, The Modern Age tag, black header with writer/artist names. Already popular among comic enthusiasts, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse took this character to the next level.
Edge of the Spider-Verse #2 (~3 Gems)
First appearance of Spider-Gwen; 2014, The Modern Age tag, white banner at bottom with block cityscape. Another character that's benefitted from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. These two characters also appear with Peter Parker in the popular children's series, Spidey and His Amazing Friends.
Even if you decide to pick up all of the comics in the group, getting common copies at the lowest price in the market should only cost 25–30 gems. If you happened to get ten free gems from one of the affiliates, you can pick up #3, #14, and #50 and have a starting villain collection. After all, it's your collection, and there are a lot of good comics out there for only a couple of gems. Buy what you like, and you'll never go wrong!
Good luck, adventurers! Happy treasure hunting!
