Scarcity Slickers II: Legend of DQ's Gems. Adventures in Veve #81

Daredevil #5 Secret Rare #4824

So!

We’ve had over a month now for the whole comic burn thing, and we’ve also had time to build stuff in the Veveverse.  My topic is about the interesting shifts that are happening because of combining the two.

If you have been researching how many of each comic rarity is left on Stackr.world (which you have to, because Veve still doesn’t separate how many of each rarity are left), one of the things you might notice is the number of Ultra Rares is very close to the number of Secret Rares.  Even in the cases where there are twenty more UR’s as opposed to SR’s, many of these comics are still scarcer than a vast majority of Secret Rare comics on the platform.  All of the other rarities are also much scarcer than any other comic on the platform… some of the comics don’t even have 1000 copies after the burn.

Question:  So what happens when you’re not a whale and you’re presented with five comic covers that are all scarce?

Answer:  You start looking at the covers and start picking out the cover you actually like the best.  That means that the Secret Rare isn’t always the chase any more.

Now, being an uncommon collector, I secure that first, and ninety-nine percent of the time I buy that in the market unless it’s so scarce that I’m forced to buy it on the drop.  Most of the time, people disrespect the uncommon so much I can grab three for the same price.

But there have been a lot of times lately that the Ultra Rare has been so good that I’ve decided to pull the lever a few times.  Not the SR… most of those are cut white panels that are so bland that it makes my Uncommons look good.  (P.S. UCs look awesome in the Veveverse.)

I mentioned in Scarcity Slickers one that when I got that “It’s Your Life Donald” SR, I was after the UR.  I never did get that UR… it’s way above my price point.  But the thing is, this is not the only time I have had this problem.

Daredevil #5… yeah, you know the one.  The one with the stained glass themed Ultra Rare.  I went for it on the drop and got the SR.  Four tries later…. Nope. No luck.

Seriously?  My luck is so weird!  I went over two years without a single SR drop!  TWO YEARS!

But now that I want the Ultra Rare on these comics because the covers are cool, I can’t hit a UR for the life of me.  Still haven’t gotten a Bruce Campbell.  I had to buy the It’s Jeff:  The Jeff-Verse UR.  As for the Baldari UR cover on Dr. Strange, I keep hitting the Rare.

Did I get a #55 Rare?  Yes.  Like I said… my luck is really weird!

But the point isn’t really about the fact that it can be just as frustrating chasing a UR as chasing an SR.

My point is that both the comic burn and the addition of the Veveverse has gotten me to look at comics a bit differently than it did before.  I’ve been going for drops a more than I have in the last six months, because the burn has evened the playing field a bit.

Popular comics have a potential to do well because they’re popular.  Scarce comics have a potential to do well because they’re scarcer.  And banger covers that everybody loves have a potential to do well because their art knocks it out of the park.

Overall, I think it’s a good balance… even if my personal luck needs some adjusting.
