In this great big world, there are a lot of rules.
Society rules, culture rules, family rules… they’re everywhere… rules of the road, rules of behavior, rules about lining up in a queue, or who gets to board a plane first. Whether it’s a question of ethics, gaming, or whether you can raise chickens in the backyard, you can guarantee that someone out there has made a rule about it.
Our parents train us in rules from a very young age. True, some are stricter, and some are so loose that other parents grit their teeth and wish they had more rules.
As we get older, we start to notice that a lot of the rules we’re expected to follow are broken by our parents.
What is up with that? It’s totally not fair! I can't wait until I'm an adult so I can make up my own rules!
Of course, that’s because we hadn’t learned yet that the hardest rules to keep are the ones we make up for ourselves.
Have you ever made your own dieting rules? How did that go for you?
Personally, I keep running into obstacles… like Thanksgiving, or vacation, or some other event for which I need to make an exception. It doesn’t take long before I have so many exceptions that the rules are pointless.
Okay, fine! I’ll make up new rules! No exceptions!
Except for tomorrow, that is—I promised the kids we’d go out to eat. Maybe next week.
No doubt about it: the rules we make for ourselves can be hard to keep, especially if you’re a very forgiving person like I am. Trust me, I can totally forgive myself for having an extra piece of cake. I wouldn’t want to waste it, after all. I’ll just make up new rules after the cake is gone.
(It is much easier to make dieting rules when there’s no cake left.)
I have the same sorts of problems when it comes to collecting on VeVe.
I have a set of rules for what I can spend, when to go for a drop, and when to shop on the market. Typically, they’re an easy set of rules to follow.
Except for Star Wars Month!
We can make an exception for Star Wars Month, right?
Oh, the Blackpink drop is three days only? Well, maybe we’ll bend the rules just a bit.
Okay, back to my rules—nothing else unless I sell something… except for uncommon comics, of course.
Maybe I should try the comic drop, though?
But my rule says never go for the comic drop when I just want the uncommon.
Well, maybe I’ll try the drop once or twice…
Darn it! All commons. What was I thinking?
Okay, fine! I’ll reset my rules again!
This time, there will be no exceptions!
As long as they don’t announce any more big drops until San Diego Comic-Con, I can hold the line until then!
And if I manage to stick to my own rules for that long…
I’ll go out and buy myself a cake.
